From Setback to Success: My Story of Failure, Reinvention, and Rediscovery

In 1997, I walked away from a demanding 80-hour-a-week corporate job, determined to build something of my own.

I had skills, experience, and ambition. 

What I didn’t have?

A clue how to market and sell.

I started my first business full of hope, but reality hit hard. Clients didn’t magically appear.

I struggled to explain why people should work with me. The financial pressure mounted, and the doubt crept in—maybe I wasn’t cut out for this.

I questioned everything.

Had I made the biggest mistake of my life?

Was I too old to start over?

Should I just go back to the corporate world?

But something inside me refused to quit. Instead of giving up, I got serious about learning how to position myself, how to communicate my value, and how to attract the right clients.

I stopped trying to be everything to everyone and focused on what I did best.

That shift changed everything. I landed my first client.

Then another.

Soon, I had a business that not only paid the bills but gave me the freedom to work on my terms.

I thought I had it all figured out. But then, life threw me another curveball.

After the financial collapse in 2008, most of my clients stopped spending money on marketing. 

Many of my clients went out of business.

My business failed.

I was lucky to land a full-time online marketing job I thought would carry me to retirement. 

After quadrupling their revenue in 3 1/2 years, at 55 years old, I was laid off after a venture capital investment.

Decades of experience, years of loyalty, and suddenly—I was out.

No paycheck.

No plan. 

Just a sinking feeling in my gut that said, “Now what?”

Starting over at 55 was different.

The job market had changed.

The world had changed.

I could have panicked, but instead, I went back to what I knew worked:

I took inventory of my strengths.

I got clear on what I loved doing.

I learned new tools to stay relevant.

And I rebuilt—again.

Fast forward to today—I’ve built multiple successful businesses and helped countless others do the same.
